Qantas to bring inflight Internet to Australia

Qantas announced today that they expect to commence trials of in-flight Wi-Fi in late 2016 under a partnership with broadband services provider ViaSat.

The trial will use a single Boeing 737 aircraft with a rollout across the entire domestic fleet of Boeing 737 and Airbus A330 aircraft.

The service will use NBN’s Sky Muster service which provides coverage across most of Australia including the highly-competitive “Golden Triangle” — the set of routes linking Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne.

The service is expected to provide up to 20Mbps per passenger and will be provided free of charge as a product differentiator.

I love the idea of keeping in touch using in-flight Internet, and especially enjoy using services in markets that already have this such as the USA. It’s fantastic to finally see progress being made in Australia!
